About the City of Waterloo Iowa
Here is a short description of the Iowa city of Waterloo. Waterloo is a city in and the county seat of Black Hawk County, Iowa, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census the population decreased by 0.5% to 68,406; the 2019 Census estimates the population at 67,328, making it the eighth-largest city in the state. The city is part of the Waterloo – Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is the more populous of the two cities.
Waterloo is rich in history. Adventure is what drove Gervais Paul Somaneaux, a devout Catholic fur-trapper, to spend the summer of 1837 trapping and trading near the falls of the Cedar River. Somaneaux, acknowledged by historians as the first European to live in the area, trapped beaver and traded with the Sauk and Fox Indians who lived along the river. Somaneaux's wanderlust got the better of him that autumn, and he moved on.
In the summer of 1845, George and Mary (Melrose) Hanna and John Melrose became the founders of Prairie Rapids Crossing (later Waterloo). Mary Hanna chose the site of their new home, charmed by the clarity of the river and beauty of the prairie. The William Virden family came in fall 1845, and James Virden and the Charles Mullan family settled in the area the next summer.

Almost all of the city is within the Waterloo Community School District. The three public high schools in the city are Waterloo West High School, Waterloo East High School, and Expo High School. Additionally a portion of the city is within the Cedar Falls Community School District.[45]
Waterloo's private high schools are Waterloo Christian School and Columbus Catholic High School, which is supported by the Catholic parishes of Waterloo and Cedar Falls. Waterloo Christian is a non-denominational college preparatory school located on the grounds of Walnut Ridge Baptist Church. The school's colors are green and yellow, and its mascot is the "Regent." Columbus' mascot is the "Sailor", a connection to the school's namesake Christopher Columbus, and its colors are green and white.
